The iYellow Wine Club was created from the simple ideas of tasting and learning more about great wines and meeting new friends along the way. Founded by Angela Aiello, the wine club has become a place for wine connoisseurs and lovers alike to join together and be part of a social club where they can learn, taste and explore wines from all over the world. With over 15 years of in-field wine experience, Angela Aiello brings a fresh and insightful perspective to conversations on vinification. Last year in mid-October, I had the pleasure of joining iYellow Wine Club on their Niagara Harvest Wine Escape tour through the heart of the Niagara Wine Country in Southern Ontario. Led by Ange herself, this daylong excursion explored the incredible vineyards of Flat Rock Cellars, Inniskillin Niagara Estate and Southbrook Vineyards.
Our first stop was the stunning vineyard of Flat Rock Cellars, which is perched on the Niagara Escarpment. Boasting a stunning view of the area of Jordan Bench’s gently rolling slopes studded with vines, this beautiful winery continues to create only the finest wines with hand picked and sorted grapes fermented with gravity-flow design. With a wide range of delicious Chardonnay and Riesling wines, my personal favourite was the Good Kharma Chardonnay 2010. This white wine features medium oak with light fruit tones and is a charitable investment tooas portion of the proceeds is donated to the Ontario Association of Food Banks.
Next, we drove to the incredible Inniskillin Niagara Estate. With over 35 years of creating exceptional wines, this vineyard has a full collection of world renowned, award winning premium VQA wines. This vineyard offers guests a full service tour and tasting boutique with an impressive selection of premium table wines from their Niagara Estate, Reserve, Discovery and Montague Vineyard Series. The progressive Icewines were a hit among everyone on the tour. Created from grapes harvested at sub zero temperatures, the finished Icewine is “intense and concentrated with the natural sugars balanced with the natural acidities creating a unique sensation on the palate of a surprisingly dry finish.” (Inniskillin) Splurge on a bottle of their red berry Cabernet Franc Icewine at your next special occasion.
Striving to produce the best locally made goods, Southbrook Vineyards has evolved into a 150-acre vineyard in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula wine region. This was a perfect spot to end our day with a full speed round tasting of organic and biodynamic wines. Owned and operated by Marilyn and Bill Redelmeier, their hospitality pavilion was constructed to meet LEED-Gold standards and the entire vineyard is committed to creating suitable viticulture. Pick up a bottle of their whimsy! collection where their in house winemakers have played with techniques and tones to create a small batch, artisanal wines. Or stop by and pick up a jar of some of their delicious organic honey or jams.
