CITY GUIDE: 24 Hours in Syracuse

The fourth largest city in New York State, Syracuse is an educational and economic hub located on the north-east corner of the Finger Lakes region. This vibrant city is the perfect gateway into this region offering visitors a ton to see and do. During our road trip down to the Finger Lakes, we dropped by Syracuse for the day to explore this ever-changing city.IMG_6351Lunch –  Aster Pantry & Parlor
Bringing together modern day cuisine restaurant inspired by the Victorian era, Aster Pantry & Parlor is a luxury dining restaurant located in downtown Syracuse in Armory Square. Their menu includes an array of farm fresh dishes made from ingredients sources from local artisans, growers and producers.

Afternoon – Explore the History of Syracuse
During the afternoon, we took a short walking tour through the history downtown core of Syracuse. Syracuse has a long history as it was first settled by Europeans when the French missionaries came to the area in the 1600s. The Jesuits were the next to come to cultivate “Salt Lake,” however after the salt industry declined after the Civil War, manufacturing industries developed throughout the area throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. With the manufacturing industries declined in the 1970s, the city was in need of a re-vamp.
IMG_6190Today, modern day Syracuse is a pulsing city where residents and visitors alike are inspired to “do your thing” in whatever way that inspires you. After dropping by such historical sites as the Erie Canal Museum, spots along the Underground Railroad and Civil War route, be sure to also drop by some of the cultural spots throughout the city to catch a glimpse of the Syracuse spirit. If you have the time, visit Destiny USA for a little adventure and shopping within the city.

Get out of the city to the Clark Reservation State Park to explore the geologic wonder of the last ice age where you can climb through cliffs to look down to the glacial plunge basin lake. This park is only 10 minutes from downtown Syracuse and offered guided nature walks and other educational programming from the Nature Center.

Dinner – Dinosaur BBQ
Dinosaur BAR-B-QUE is an institution within Syracuse serving delicious southern inspired barbecue dishes created with their specials sauces, rubs and flavours. This restaurants has now nine other outposts all over the New York State and USA and is defiantly worth the wait for a taste of their incredible dishes.IMG_6304

To Stay – Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles
Built in 1807, the Sherwood Inn offers guests a beautiful view of the Skaneateles Lake while staying in a room that takes you back in time. Each room is beautifully decorated with period inspired furniture and decor items. Their on-site restaurant serves traditional American fare in their fine dining room and casual dishes in their tavern.
