Now it its fifth year, the Dîner en Blanc has become a staple for Torontonians to get all dressed up in their best summer whites. Each year, a lucky lottery of guest are given the chance to join together under the stars for this regal affair. Only an hour before the dinner, they are told the top secret location and hundreds of people rush together in all white for this pop-up diner party that is fit for royalty. This year, over a thousand hungry guests found their way to Toronto’s Harbourfront to set up their table and gourmet picnic.
Although this may not always be your “cup of tea,” there is a value in the tradition and camaraderie a diner like this created. From the waving of the napkins to the lighting of the sparklers, there is true value in the tradition and sense of order an event like this instills. To have over a thousand people join together wearing all white, bringing their own proper table wear and linens and to cater their extensive picnics is a feat in and of itself. One of my favourite parts of this evening truly had to be wandering through the many rows to catch a glimpse of the ornate table settings people pulled together and the elaborate meals that they brought with them as well.
If you are lucky enough to get an invite to the luxurious affair next year, remember that guests must bring:
- A table, two white chairs, white tablecloth.
- A picnic basket comprising fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware.
- A catered picnic basket option, which can be picked up on site, will be available for those who do not wish to pack their own. Guests wishing to do so must reserve online through Dîner en Blanc website during the initial ticket registration.
- Champagne and/or wine. (Beer and hard liquor are prohibited)
