Runway Recap: Day 1 Of World MasterCard Fashion Week

With over 35 runway presentations over five jam packed days, World MasterCard Fashion Week is welcoming a wide array of Canadian fashion designers to Toronto this week.  Yesterday marked the first day of World MasterCard Fashion Week featuring Sid Neigum, Pink Tartan and the Mercedes Benz Start Up Presentation.Come behind the scenes with us as we explore the Spring/Summer 2015 collections of the best fashion designers in Canada.

 Sid Neigum

Fashion forward designer Sid Neigum kicked of World MasterCard Fashion Week last night. He showcased his innovative line that incorporated laser cutting and mathematical pattern design to transform two-dimensional figures into three dimensional for his Spring/Summer 2015 collection based on packaging design. This sleek architecturally inspired collection fused structured pieces with mechanized silhouettes in a monochromatic palette. Accompanied by a live harp, this avant-garde collection eerily resonated a post apocalyptic world.

Pink Tartan

A brand known for its luxury and sophistication, Pink Tartan epitomizes the class and elegance of Kimberly Newport-Mimran. Their Spring/Summer 2015 collection embodies their classic style of modern refinement revitalizing classic sportswear pieces with super-luxe fabrics mixing a variety of textures and prints. This season’s collection embodied the spirit of the sixties featuring vintage style elements in her designs. Flowing fabrics are balanced with tailored pieces revitalizing the retro hippie chic with a modern appeal. From swimwear to suiting, Pink Tartan offers comprehensive collection for the modern woman.

Mercedes Benz Start Up

The future of the Canadian fashion industry is promising. In its fourth year, the Mercedes Benz Start Up offers mentorship to help discover emerging fashion designers in a group runway show on the first night of World MasterCard Fashion Week. The program travelled from coast to coast to find this year’s six finalists who are the next generation of Canadian talent giving them access to fashion business experts to help them hone a broad range of skills to help develop a sustainable career within the industry.

Tonight, Sid Neigum received the titled of Awarded Designer who will continue to receive mentorship from this initiative and will get the chance to be featured in next year’s World MasterCard Fashion Week with a fully produced runway show. Born in Alberta, currently based in Toronto, Sid Neigum has already been gaining international reception for his innovative line after being awarded Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Labels Award in 2012.

The Toronto-based women’s wear and accessories designer Beaufille founded by sisters Chloe and Parris Gordon have created a contemporary collection that embodies their tough girl aesthetic by artfully infusing geometric cut outs contrasted by a variety of materials, colours and prints.

Eliza Faulkner

Based out of Vancouver Island, Eliza Faulkner has developed her signature style by combining sporty details and classic silhouettes made with luxurious natural fibers for women to achieve that effortlessly west coast cool.

Designed by Helder Aguiar and Diego Fuchs, BLAK.I has developed a brand of avant-garde garments ranging from fashion-forward intricately cut separates to fluid dresses to edgy leatherwear, by reviving the rocker chic aesthetic with feminine designs and mixing a variety of textures, graphic prints in their garments.

After a vibrant career working in the international fashion industry, Valerie Tolila launched Vaiken, a unique line that embodies the fashion sensibility of the modern radiant and confident women creating a playful line which infuses airy silhouettes into bold materials.

Laura Siegel

Laura Siegel has made a name for herself within the fashion industry by creating easy-to-wear textured pieces collaborating from artisans in Asia and Latin America to incorporate the skills of silver-smithing, knitting, natural dyeing and embroidery in her designs.
