From May 2nd to May 4th the North American Food Innovation Exhibition (SIAL) took place at the Enercare Centre in Toronto. Hosting over 850 national and international exhibitors from 60 countries the main attraction however was the European Union Pavilion, featuring a delegation of over 60 European businesses lead by Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan.
The Day 2 line up of the conference featured cooking lesson and demostrations; European Union & Canadian product pairings as well was well informed presentations from European Union representatives regarding topics on Meat & Meat Products, Fruits & Vegetables, Beverages, Dairy and innovations in the food and beverage industry.
This year’s SIAL event featured a unique contest, known as Canada’s Biggest Extra Virgin Olive Oil Contest. A jury of experts in the industry selected the 5 most designed bottles to be exhibited throughout the show and visitors were invited to vote for the most beautiful one at the Olive d’Or booth. This year’s winner for the most beautifully designed bottle was Picoto Olive Oil from Portugal. The Picoto Olive Oil is harvested from centennial Portuguese olive trees, from varietals such as Vendeal, Madural, and Galega.
This year also marked the 10th Edition of the SIAL Innovation contest; notable recipients included Genuine Coconut Water from Spain, Gourmet Sea Salts from the United Kingdom, Honey with Super Foods from Market Sage Import Ltd (UK), and Mixes of Cereals & Pulses from France. With many innovations in the food industry being recognized from the European Union, it is no surprise that the EU was chosen to be the 2017 Region of Honour.
The EU is known for having a high-value in the food industry sector, as well as a diverse and expanding platform, and many unique partnerships in the agri-food business. With over 28 countries in the EU it makes sense that Canadians can work closely to facilitate unique trade opportunities for consumers alike. We were so thrilled and taken aback by the amount of unique products and services EU businesses have to offer overall and Creators Commune will be sharing some unique recipes demonstrated at SIAL this year pairing European favourites with Canadian classics!
