After featuring her amazing collection in our holiday style guide, we decided to reconnect with this great designer and learn more about her.
1) What sparked you to begin a career in the fashion industry?
From a very young age you could never tell me how to dress; for example, I would wear winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter. Fashion has always been in my blood. My mom was a flight attendant and travelled the world. She regularly visiting London, Paris, Milan and Tokyo and was constantly surrounded and influenced by fashion. During this time, I watched her start her own luxury sweater business using some of the same embellishments that I use today. I am continuing where she left off by putting a unique spin on an everyday wardrobe staple.
2) What is it about women’s wear that intrigued you the most?
I can relate to women’s wear and I find fashion exciting! I can see the gap in the industry and know from my friends and myself what women want/need in a t-shirt. There are so many possibilities with materials, cuts and embellishments – it’s never boring.
3) What has been your biggest achievement/obstacle so far in your career?
My biggest achievement would be the celebrity support that I have received. Recently, Jessica Chastain wrote me a letter saying how much she loved my shirts. Jessica Alba, Rachel McAdams and Lea Michele are also fans of the brand.
My biggest obstacle has been maintaining a work/life balance. The fashion industry never sleeps and constantly involves late night events and meetings – lots of long days spent in sky-high heels!
4) How did you come up with the idea of creating a line of luxury t-shirts?
I have my honours bachelor of business administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and I grew up loving fashion and clothing. I couldn’t find an ultra-premium, flattering t-shirt that was luxurious, super soft, and that featured luxury embellishments that could be transitioned from day to night. I wanted to add unexpected elegance to a wardrobe staple.
5) Who is the fashion icon or fashion designer you admire the most?
I love Emma Stone’s style – she is able to perfectly balance being fashion forward and elegant. As for designers, I am a big fan of Smythe. They also took a wardrobe staple (jackets), and created a massive Canadian brand that is coveted and sold worldwide. They are a constant inspiration for my business.
6) Where do you draw your inspiration?
I draw my inspiration from many areas – travel, art, paintings and simply walking through the fabric stores to see what pops out. In my previous collections, I drew inspiration from Paris and Marie Antoinette. I tried to visualize her running through the Palace of Versailles in a beautiful ball gown skirt and one of my t-shirts. This season I focused on Italy and the Borgias family from the Italian renaissance – I used Swarovski crystal mesh to look like armour and leather for a darker feel.
7) If you could have one celebrity become the face of your line, who would it be?
I would love Blake Lively to become the face of my brand. She has a lifestyle that balances being a mother, businesswoman and fashion mogul so she could easily transition my shirts from day-to-night. Blake also showcases unique artisan labels through her website “Preserve” – she loves products that are unique, hand-made and have a story.
8) What can we expect to see from your collection in the future?
I love to experiment with unique embellishments and designs so you will see more of that in the future. I also have an upcoming trip to London so I will definitely be pulling inspiration from the Royal family, art and architecture.
