Want To Become A Fashion Designer?

Have you ever wanted to become a fashion designer? Thanks to the generous support of Mercedes-Benz Start Up, this childhood dream of yours could be come a reality. This summer, a nation wide search will be launched to help find Canada’s next best fashion designer. The next cycle will stop in three locations across this great country to help find six promising designers who will showcase their upcoming collection during the national finale group runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in October 2015. The Awarded Designer will be chosen by a panel of judges and receive a $30,000 bursary, professional mentorship, coverage across leading publications and a fully produced solo runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in March 2016. This program is an asset in helping to foster the Canadian fashion industry as it provides the necessary resources and exposure emerging Canadian designers need to create a sustainable career.


Last year, the young and extremely talented Alberta native Sid Neigum was named the Awarded Designer after showcasing is Spring 2015 collection. With its’ intricate design based on one-of-a-kind and three dimensional pieces created from intricate techniques such as laser cutting and metallic fabrics into in an all-black collection that has received a large amount of praise and recognition.

“I’m excited to present my collection as the Mercedes-Benz Start Up Awarded Designer,” said Neigum. “I’ve benefited greatly from the mentorship that MBSU has provided over the past few months. Last season, I scratched the surface of what’s possible with modular origami and after receiving the title last October, I’ve had the resources in order to showcase what I can really do with this technique.”

To be eligible to participate, designers must have a registered Canadian business that has been operating for less than five years. Auditions will be then held in Montreal (August 12 and 13), Toronto (August 17 and 18) and Calgary (August 20 and 21)

Deadline for applications is June 1, 2015.
